Yu Darvish Auto for 2012 Allen and Ginter

Topps adds Yu Darvish, Richard Petty and others to 2012 Allen & Ginter autograph lineup

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor
This year’s edition of Allen & Ginter is still a few months away but that hasn’t stopped Topps from adding even more to its lineup.
And it’s the lineup that matters most to most collectors, the autograph lineup.
The company announced on Wednesday that it will be adding two MLB newcomers and two other sports legends to the popular retro-styled card line. Added to the lineup are new Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish, new Oakland A’s outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, NASCAR legend Richard Petty and former Olympic wrestler Rulon Gardner.

The additions come in addition to what had been previously announced — no exclusions were mentioned — a lineup that, on the baseball side alone is topped by Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Cal Ripken Jr., Stan Musial, Ken Griffey Jr. and Albert Pujols. That’s a lineup perhaps not seen before in the six-year history of the product.
On the non-baseball side, the autographs already included Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover model Kate Upton, tennis star Roger Federer, Olympian Michael Phelps, basketball coach Bobby Knight and golfing great Arnold Palmer.
Also added to the list are tennis icon John McEnroe, noted golf instructor Hank Haney and even a video game champion, Fatal1ty (aka Johnathan Wendel).
Others of note on the non-baseball inclusions are: Michael Buffer, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Al Unser Sr., Bela Karolyi, Annie Duke, Don Denkinger, Meadowlark Lemon, Curly Neal, Colin Montgomerie, Erin Andrews, Greg Gumbel, Keegan Bradley and Ara Parseghian.

2012 Topps Heritage Error Variations (from Beckett.com)

So, what are the 2012 Topps Heritage variations?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor
Hope you didn’t jettison some of those 2012 Topps Heritage commons just yet — as there are some tough-to-pull variations to be found inside those packs.
As previously reported here, there are 10 cards in the set that have intentional error-and-correction variations — some as a nod to the 1963 set. While Topps has not yet confirmed these cards, here is our list confirmed with the help of a few dealers around the country.

15 -- Darwin Barney, error has no position on the card front

29Brad Peacock, Devin Mesoraco, Justin De Fratus, Joe Savery; error says 1962 Rookie Stars

54John Gaub, Addison Reed, Adron Chambers, Dellin Betances; error says 1962 Rookie Stars

113 Kerry Wood, error shows Aramis Ramirez (in a Brewers jersey) in main photo

231 – Dan Haren, error shows Mark Trumbo in main photo

341 – Ryan Madson, error shows team name and position in black letters with a red line through secondary photo

380 – Carlos Pena, error has “complete major and minor league batting record” on stats header on the back

454 – Julio Teheran, error lacks a white box around the card number on the back

483 – Mike Stanton, error has a W instead of R over the runs stats column on the back

We’ll have more on the color-swap and image-swap variations found in Heritage in the next issue of Beckett Baseball.

Tobacco (cigarette) Cards

This Allen and Ginter pair were manufactured almost 125 years apart. On the left is the elusive 2010 Stephen Strasburg and on the right is the 1887 John Teemer. I just discovered however that the original Allen and Ginter tobacco cards were made slightly longer than the new ones that Topps has made. It doesn't fit in the standard tobacco card case. Oh well. Below is a little history of tobacco cards:

Beginning in 1875, cards depicting actresses, baseball players, Indian chiefs, and boxers were issued by the US-based Allen and Ginter tobacco company. These are considered to be some of the first cigarette cards.[2] Other tobacco companies such as Goodwin & Co. soon followed suit. They first emerged in the US, then the UK, then, eventually, in many other countries.
In the UK, W.D. & H.O. Wills in 1887 were one of the first companies to include advertising cards with their cigarettes, but it was John Player & Sons in 1893 that produced one of the first general; interest sets ‘Castles and Abbeys’. Thomas Ogden soon followed in 1894 and in 1895, Wills produced their first set ‘Ships and Sailors’, followed by ‘Cricketers' in 1896. In 1906, Ogden’s produced a set of football cards depicting footballers in their club colours, in one of the first full-colour sets.
Each set of cards typically consisted of 25 or 50 related subjects, but series of over 100 cards per issue are known. Popular themes were 'beauties' (famous actresses, film stars and models), sporters (in the US mainly baseball, in the rest of the world mainly football and cricket), nature, military heroes and uniforms, heraldry[3] and city views.
Today, for example, sports and military historians study these cards for details on uniform design.[4]
Some very early cigarette cards were printed on silk which was then attached to a paper backing. They were discontinued in order to save paper during World War II, and never fully reintroduced thereafter.

World Record

Early in 2007, a world record price was paid in America for a single card - $2,350,000. This card was sold later on in the year for another world record price $2,800,000. The card in question featured Honus Wagner, one of the great names in U.S. baseball at the turn of the 20th century. Wagner was a dedicated non-smoker and objected when America’s biggest tobacco corporation planned to picture him on a cigarette card without his permission. Threats of legal action prevented its release, but a few slipped out, and it was one of these that stunned the collecting world when it was auctioned.[5]

Posey Superfractor RC Update

2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Buster Posey RC 1/1 Superfractor

So on February 9th this guy bought the card via Buy it Now and made a Best Offer of $1700.00. The seller took it as he originally had it listed for $2500 or best offer. The buyer must have thought he had a steal because he quickly turned it around and listed it starting at a .99 cent auction. Not real happy with the lack of attention, he ended the auction with about a day or two left and the bids only had it up to $350 or so. Now he has relisted it for auction but starting at the price he purchased it for, $1700.00. With 9 hours left, 0 bids. Interesting.

Topps Lands Darvish

Rangers’ Darvish signs exclusive deal with Topps

NEW YORK (AP)—Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish has reached a multiyear deal with Topps that grants the company exclusive rights for autographed trading and game-used memorabilia cards
The deal announced Monday is the first in the United States for Darvish, Japan’s top pitcher before he got a six-year contract from the two-time defending American League champions.
Topps vice president of marketing Mark Sapir says Darvish “transcends baseball on a global scale.”
Topps will also use Darvish for social media and on packaging and promotion for the company’s products
Darvish says he’s excited to see his rookie card with him wearing a Rangers jersey.
The 25-year-old right-hander was a two-time Pacific League MVP in Japan. He had a 93-38 record with a 1.99 ERA in 167 games the past seven seasons.

Ruth Game Used Jersey Auction

Earliest known Babe Ruth game-used New York Yankees jersey hits auction block in April

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor
A circa 1920 New York Yankees road jersey worn by Babe Ruth might fetch seven figures when it hits the auction block through SCP Auctions on April 30.
“This is simply the finest sports artifact we’ve handled in our 30-year history,” said SCP Auctions President David Kohler. “It has it all. You would be hard pressed to dream up a more desirable baseball artifact. The historical impact of Ruth’s emergence in the Big Apple in the early 1920s, combined with the jersey’s superb original condition, makes this a sports treasure of the highest order.”
It’s the earliest known gamer for The Bambino, and the bidding through the Laguna Niguel, Calif.-based company will close on May 19.

Ruth, of course, was one of the world’s most-recognizable athletes in his time and remains so today. His 714 home runs were an MLB record well beyond his playing days until Hank Aaron topped the mark in 1974.
The Spalding flannel has Ruth’s name stitched into the collar, and the placement of the New York patches on the front have been photo-matched to images included with the auction’s preview information. More details will come when the auction opens.
“It has a definite aura about it,” said SCP Auctions Managing Director Dan Imler. “It is hard to put a value on an item of such singular importance. Ruth was a man of mythic proportions. More than any other man, he transcended sports, achieving a nearly unrivaled status as an American icon. In the process, he changed the game of baseball forever. To think this jersey was worn by him during the most pivotal years of his career, and arguably the most consequential years in baseball history, makes this one of the finest sports artifacts we’ll see in our lifetime.”
In 2005 Donruss/Playoff purchased a Ruth home gamer from around 1925 (one of three known pinstriped Ruth jerseys), which it cut up and placed into baseball cards. That jersey cost the company only $250,000.
